The strategy aligns with Meta’s multibillion-dollar investment in AI, targeting high-usage markets like India and Brazil.
In a major shift for the world’s most popular messaging app, Meta has announced the rollout of advertisements within WhatsApp, alongside the introduction of paid subscriptions for broadcast channels. The move aims to boost revenue streams and support Meta’s growing investments in artificial intelligence.
Ads will appear in the “Updates” tab, which sees over 1.5 billion daily visits, making it a prime spot for promotional content. Additionally, Status updates and Channels will begin to display sponsored content from advertisers.
WhatsApp will also allow channel owners to create paid subscription tiers, with zero commission fees during the initial launch phase, offering a new monetization path for content creators and businesses.
Meta is targeting key markets outside the U.S., particularly India and Brazil, where WhatsApp plays a central role in daily communication and digital commerce.
These changes are part of a broader plan to position WhatsApp at the heart of Meta’s AI-driven ecosystem, into which the company is pouring billions of dollars.
