Meta has officially acquired PlayAI, a voice AI startup known for developing advanced speech models and an intuitive voice agent platform. The move comes as part of Meta’s broader strategy to deepen its investment in generative AI and enhance user interaction through voice-driven technologies.
Founded by Mahmoud Felfel and Hammad Syed, PlayAI enables developers and businesses to build and deploy powerful voice applications rapidly. The technology has proven valuable across a variety of use cases, from customer support and sales to content creation.
According to an internal memo reviewed by Bloomberg, the entire PlayAI team will join Meta next week, where they will report to Johan Schalkwyk, who recently joined Meta from another voice AI company, Sesame AI Inc.
While the financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed, a Meta spokesperson confirmed the deal, emphasizing that PlayAI’s work in natural voice generation and its scalable voice creation platform aligns closely with Meta’s ambitions in AI Characters, Meta AI, wearables, and audio content creation.
This acquisition follows Meta’s recent restructuring of its AI division, placing former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang at the helm of the newly formed Meta Superintelligence Labs.
